When Looking for a minister and harpest for our wedding, my husband and I decided on what seemed to be a convenient option...Andy and VeeRonna! We were surprised and grateful that they welcomed us, perfect strangers, into their home to make sure we received the arrangements we desired for our ceremony. Within minutes of joining their household, I could tell they had a special family dynamic, with meaningful and mutually respectful relationships, and LOTS of love! During our visit, their kids played with our son, and the whole family was interacting with and enjoying each other and our company. Not long after arriving, I asked them what they believe the secret to a "good" marriage was. I didn't get a lengthy response or typical comment as I have from others in the past; instead, Andy referred me to read a book that he and VeeRonna valued. I read it and enjoyed it immensely. This book makes you think about the things you may be doing to sabotage your marriage and provides insights to get yourselves back on track. For me, I realized certain things that I do that haven't necessarily thrown our marriage off, but could do so over a prolonged period. It has also helped me to reflect on what is important and that some things that happen in life that seem like a big deal at the time, are really small when taken in the context of our lives together. I also learned some things about the author that I can use in my own relationship to make it even better.
This is a really great book. Encouraging, humorous, real, practical, challenging, inspiring. After being married 20 years this book is a great reminder to value and invest in your marriage and your spouse. Its an easy read and well worth your time and investment. Whether you've been married 20 years, 2 years or whether you are hoping to be married some day, get this book and read it.
On the surface, this is a fast, easy read. When you go back to re-read and think about the chapter, you realize we pretty much already know these things; we've just forgotten them. I remind myself that I was lucky enough to marry my best friend. I try to treat him the way I want to be treated. Remembering that, along with having God in our marriage, has helped us over the rough times. I think this book is helpful for anyone in a relationship, but even more so when you have chosen to declare that relationship before God and society.
I thought this book was amazing! I loved how in depth the topics were. I felt that it made me realize how important it is to make a marriage/relationship work well. Some of the topics I know are important in a marriage but Andy made me realize how important it is and why they are! There are so many things you forget about doing after being together for so long that are just as necessary to do! I am getting married in a few weeks (March 2014) after being together for 6 years and I feel that if We do these things in the book that our marriage will start off amazing and remain amazing! I would recommend this book to people in serious relationships, engaged, and married, weather they have problems or not!
I shared this with my 33 year old, single daughter. She has been dating the same man for five years and remains unmarried. Also, encouraged her to have him read it. She DID read it and tells me "some of it is just common sense, but it really opened my eyes to the relationship I've been in all these years." Personally, I wish I could have had the opportunity to read it 30 years ago. Excellent insight and a very enjoyable read. Bless you for sharing so much of yourselves with "us".
I am not all the way through this book yet. Mostly because there are so many points that I am highlighting and spending extra time considering. The book is easy to read - and understand - and of great value to those who wish to keep their marriage strong or return it to strength. It really is a primer on how to improve a relationship and the tips are useful in many of our other relationships as well. I look forward to finishing and reading it again as time goes by as we all know - sometimes it's just good to review!
- It was good, content wise, and should be helpful to many people who never had a healthy concept of marriage or "The Talk" from an experienced parent, adult or other mentor.
- From a writing standpoint, I did not find it to flow well. There were several confounding sentences that needed rereading in order to understand. At times, had to pause to be certain of the point being made. Also, some unnecessary and immature phrases used. Better proofreading would have revealed a few missing words.
- The humorous and humbling stories and personal experiences are what kept me reading. Those, and suggested applications, made the idea and purpose of the book a worthwhile read.
- This author will produce a better product if he heeds the readers reviews. I would like to see the progress (in the next offering) because I believe his heart is truly behind his authorship.
